Mar 30, 2022 | News

March 30, 2022 Credit Abuse Resistance Education (CARE) is proud to announce the inaugural recipient of its Hon. John C. Ninfo, II Award, Lynn Tavenner of the law firm of Tavenner and Beran, PLC in Richmond, Va. The award, named after CARE’s founder, was created to recognize exemplary service to CARE and the advancement of financial literacy education.

An attorney who has practiced bankruptcy law for more than 20 years, Tavenner served as the first chair of CARE’s national Board of Directors and led CARE through the organization’s transition into an independent nonprofit. “Lynn’s work in service of our mission has been an inspiration to the financial literacy community, and we are thrilled to recognize her commitment and accomplishments,” said Dan Fisher, CARE’s chairman. Judge Ninfo will present the award to Tavenner at CARE’s 20th anniversary celebration on April 29, 2022, in conjunction with the American Bankruptcy Institute’s (ABI’s) Annual Spring Meeting in Washington, D.C.

Tavenner served as CARE’s board chair for six years and is the co-coordinator of CARE’s Richmond chapter. She frequently speaks on a variety of insolvency topics, is a Fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy, and is a former member of ABI’s Board of Directors. Tavenner also has been a member of the chapter 7 panel of bankruptcy trustees for the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Virginia since 1997 and has received ongoing recognition in her field, including being named Richmond Area Bankruptcy Lawyer of the Year for five consecutive years by The Best Lawyers in America.

Hon. John C. Ninfo, II, a retired bankruptcy judge who practiced in the Western District of New York, founded CARE in 2002 as a personal finance literacy educational outreach program that connects insolvency professionals with middle schools, high schools, colleges and other organizations to provide young people with lessons and skills that can help them lead financially responsible lives. Judge Ninfo continues to serve the public as a personal finance columnist and CARE program presenter. His namesake award recognizes outstanding individuals who envision and execute CARE’s mission of educating the next generation on financial literacy skills.

Lynn Tavenner has contributed tirelessly to the success of CARE, and her efforts have provided invaluable resources to both students and CARE volunteers. Her dedication, commitment and leadership throughout her
time at CARE has inspired countless individuals and helped move the organization forward. “Lynn’s dedication to CARE and her enthusiasm for financial literacy education make her the perfect recipient of this Award,” said Judge Ninfo.
